03Who owns the festivals
The short version: As of 2026, two US companies, Live Nation and AEG, sit behind most of the biggest American festivals, while KKR-owned Superstruct and the German ticketing group CTS Eventim hold the largest portfolios in Europe. Most of the big deals follow one pattern: a large promoter buys a controlling stake and the founder stays on to run the show. Plenty of festivals are still independent, Glastonbury the most famous among them. Who owns a festival rarely shows on the poster, but it can shape the ticket site, the sponsors and where else your favorite act is allowed to play that summer.
Who are the big festival owners in 2026?
The largest owner by count is Live Nation, which says in its annual report that it operated "131 festivals globally in 2025" and calls itself "one of the largest music festival producers in the world."1 AEG, its main US rival, says it runs 25 music festivals and promotes more than 12,000 shows.45 In Europe, Superstruct Entertainment runs "over 80 music festivals" in 10 countries across Europe and Australia, and has been owned by the investment firm KKR since a deal announced in June 2024.46 CTS Eventim's festival arm, EVENTIM LIVE, says it has "more than 50 formats" across more than 45 promoters.47
| Owner | Parent | Notable festivals | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live Nation (with C3 Presents, Insomniac) | Live Nation Entertainment (public, US) | Lollapalooza (Chicago, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Santiago, São Paulo), Austin City Limits; Insomniac's Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas via a 2013 partnership | 1 48 30 |
| AEG Presents / Goldenvoice | AEG (private, US) | Coachella, Stagecoach, Panorama, Firefly | 45 49 |
| Superstruct Entertainment | KKR (since 2024) | Wacken Open Air, Defqon.1, Parookaville, Sziget, Tinderbox, Boardmasters, Sónar, Flow, Arenal Sound, Zwarte Cross, elrow, Victorious, Resurrection Fest, Lost Village | 46 |
| EVENTIM LIVE | CTS Eventim (public, Germany) | Rock am Ring, Rock im Park, Hurricane, Southside, Nova Rock | 47 |
| Glastonbury Festivals | Eavis family (private, UK) | Glastonbury | 50 |
The table counts what each company names publicly. Neither Live Nation's nor AEG's full festival list was confirmed for this guide.
How did Live Nation end up with Lollapalooza?
Live Nation got Lollapalooza by buying into its promoter. Lollapalooza in Chicago is run by C3 Presents, which also runs Austin City Limits. In December 2014, Live Nation bought a reported 51% of C3 for a reported $125 million, which brought Lollapalooza's editions in Chicago, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Santiago and São Paulo under its roof.48
The dance side moved first. In June 2013, Live Nation and Insomniac, the company behind Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas, announced a partnership with no terms disclosed. The Wall Street Journal had reported the month before that Live Nation was about to pay about $50 million for a stake, and a $100 million figure also circulated. Insomniac founder Pasquale Rotella said in an online statement that "the Insomniac team, led by myself, will maintain complete creative control of all events" and that "we are still a stand-alone company."303132
Both deals fit the pattern this section keeps coming back to: the buyer gets the brand, the cash flow and a seat at the table, and the people who built the festival keep booking it.
Who owns Coachella?
Coachella is produced by Goldenvoice, part of AEG Presents, which also lists Stagecoach and Panorama among its festivals.49 AEG has bought into other events too: in July 2018 it bought out Red Frog Events' remaining shares of Firefly, in Dover, Delaware, taking full ownership.49 For how Coachella itself works on the ground, the sister guide to Coachella has the long version.
AEG and Live Nation differ in one structural way that matters to fans. Live Nation's annual report lists a ticketing segment that brought in $3.1 billion in 2025, alongside concerts and sponsorship.1 That means a Live Nation festival can be booked, promoted, sponsored and ticketed inside one company.
What did KKR buy when it bought Superstruct?
Superstruct is the youngest of the big owners. James Barton and Roderik Schlösser founded it in 2017, and by 2024 it ran more than 80 festivals in 10 countries, from Wacken Open Air to Sziget to Sónar.46 The seller, the private equity firm Providence Equity Partners, announced the sale to KKR on June 21, 2024. The price was not disclosed, and Providence kept an option to invest €250 million in the business.46 Digital Music News, linking to the Financial Times, called it a "reported $1.4 billion (€1.3 billion) deal."51
Private equity firms such as KKR and Providence buy companies to grow them and, eventually, sell them on. Superstruct went from one private equity owner to another, which is a normal life cycle for a portfolio company and a reason to watch for further changes.
The portfolio has kept growing under KKR: in January 2025 Superstruct bought Boiler Room, the UK electronic music streaming platform, from the ticketing company DICE for an undisclosed sum.52 Wikipedia reports that Alex Mahon was named chief executive in April 2025.53
Where does CTS Eventim fit?
CTS Eventim is best known for selling tickets, and its festivals sit with the promoters it owns. Its 2024 revenue was €2.809 billion, up 19.1%, with €1.971 billion from live entertainment, and that year it bought Vivendi's ticketing and festival business, including See Tickets, for €300 million.54 In 2026 its EVENTIM LIVE arm reported "more than one million total attendees" across its festivals by July 10, naming Rock am Ring, Rock im Park, Hurricane, Southside and Nova Rock.47
Which festivals are still independent?
Glastonbury is the best-known holdout. Michael Eavis founded it in 1970, and in October 2024 he transferred his shares to his daughter Emily Eavis. He remains a director.5055 Independence does not mean no partners: the festival's partners include the BBC, the Co-op and Vodafone, and Neil Young said on his blog that the BBC arrangement left Glastonbury "now under corporate control."55 Its ownership, per Companies House filings reported by DJ Mag, stays with the family.50
Most festivals in the world are small, local and owned by whoever started them, and they rarely make headlines about ownership.
In New England
The region's best-known festivals sit on opposite sides of the ownership pattern. Boston Calling, founded in 2013 by Brian Appel and Mike Snow, both formerly of the radio station WFNX,9 sold a controlling interest to The Madison Square Garden Company on July 6, 2016, with Appel, its CEO, staying on to help run the company.56 The Boston Globe reported in June 2025 that the company and MSG split in 2022 and that by 2023 it was a Live Nation subsidiary, with C3 Presents named as producer.57
Newport Folk and Newport Jazz, in Rhode Island, have been run since 2011 by the Newport Festivals Foundation, which George Wein set up, according to Wikipedia.4 The foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on music education and artist relief, so there are no shareholders to pay.58 The New England section has the full story of both.
Elsewhere in the world
Ownership looks different by region. In the US, two companies own venues, festivals and, in Live Nation's case, a ticketing business.1 Continental Europe has more private equity (Superstruct) and ticketing-led groups (CTS Eventim).4654 The UK still has large family-run festivals such as Glastonbury alongside festivals in corporate portfolios.46 In Latin America, the most visible international brand is Lollapalooza, with editions in Buenos Aires, Santiago and São Paulo under Live Nation's C3.48
What does ownership change for a festivalgoer?
Often less than people expect on the day. In the deals above where the sources say so, the founder stayed on: Appel stayed on at Boston Calling, and Rotella said Insomniac was "still a stand-alone company" after its deal.563031 Where ownership does show up, it tends to be in four places.
- Tickets. A festival owned by a company with its own ticketing business will usually sell through it. Live Nation's ticketing segment and CTS Eventim's ticket business are both reported in their accounts.154
- Sponsors. Live Nation's annual report says "a large portion of sponsorships are usually associated with our outdoor venues and festivals" and describes "multi-festival branding opportunities."1 A brand that signs with a big owner can appear at several of its festivals at once.
- Artist exclusivity. Large festivals use radius clauses, which limit where else an act can play around the festival. Owners say this protects a lineup they paid for; independent promoters have argued in court that it shuts them out. Where the money goes covers the terms and the cases.
- Stability. A big owner can absorb a bad year more easily than an independent can. The flip side, critics argue, is less room for small rivals. Neil Young's complaint about Glastonbury shows the argument is about partners and influence as well as owners.55
Supporters of consolidation point to money for production, safety and artist fees that small operators cannot match. Critics point to fewer independent buyers and ticket and sponsor tie-ins. This guide takes no side.
