06How festivals sell out
The short version: Festivals sell in layers: past buyers first, then sponsor cardholders, then everyone on the list, then the general on-sale, with the price stepping up each time a tier empties. The lineup reveal is the biggest marketing moment of the year, but the strongest brands now sell out before naming anyone - Newport Folk did it in under a minute in 2025. After that, the fight moves to resale, where festivals either lock tickets to a named person or warn fans off the secondary market.
Why is the lineup announcement such a big deal?
Because for most festivals it is the moment the year's sales get going, and it is timed around everyone else's (how a lineup gets made explains the contract side). Coachella announced in the first week of January from 2014 to 2020, then the second week after the 2020-21 cancellations, and other festivals traditionally follow (as reported in 2023).90
A leak counts as damage. Charles Attal of C3 Presents, Lollapalooza's producer, on a leaked lineup around 2008: "It's hurtful to the festival and the city of Chicago." A leak forces a round of calls to agents and can cost the festival radio and TV bookings built around the reveal.87
Boston Calling announced its 2025 lineup on Instagram on January 6, 2025, with a presale two days later on January 8 at 10am ET (reported).95 Two days between reveal and presale is the window for fans to decide.
Can a festival sell out before announcing anyone?
Yes, and it is no longer rare. Lollapalooza's three-day passes sold out in under three hours in 2013 before the lineup was out, which organizers called a first in festival history; they then moved the reveal up from April 9.96
Tomorrowland sold 200,000 tickets in its Belgian presale in 18 minutes in 2025, a record (the previous year took 27 minutes), for 400,000 ticket holders across two weekends, July 18-20 and 25-27, 2025. IQ Magazine named Wacken Open Air, Primavera Sound, Green Man and Electric Picnic as other speedy sellouts.97
In New England: Newport Folk with no lineup
Newport Folk Festival 2025 (July 25-27, 2025) sold out on February 5, 2025, "in less than 60 seconds (closer to 1 second)," without announcing a single performer, according to Newport Buzz. Resale listings reportedly passed $1,000 within minutes.98
Sales ran through DICE. Later buyers were sent to a waiting list, and the festival warned fans against "speculative tickets" on secondary sites, noting that it does not issue PDF tickets.99 A "speculative" listing is a seller offering a ticket they may not have yet. More on Newport is in the New England section.
Face value was modest next to those listings. What's Up Newp reported 2025 prices of $286.34 for a three-day general admission pass, $224.54 for two days and $116.39 for a single day, all including fees, with children under 10 admitted free (reported, not an official price list).100
What is a loyalty presale, and how do you get one?
A presale is a sale window before the general on-sale. A loyalty presale gives early, sometimes cheaper, access to people who bought or attended before. Codes usually go to whoever is already on file, so keep the contact details on your ticketing account current.
Outside Lands in San Francisco published its 2026 ladder in full, and it is a good model of how access is layered:101
| Step | Who gets in | Notes (official, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Loyalty Presale | Past Front Gate buyers and 2021-2025 wristband registrants | Codes sent by SMS on March 3 |
| 2. Chase presale | Chase cardholders | 6-ticket maximum |
| 3. "Ranger" presale | Anyone who signs up | Open list |
| 4. General on-sale | Everyone | March 5, 12pm PT |
Outside Lands says presales are "the only opportunity to access tickets at the lowest available price tier," and payment plans were offered on all ticket types.101
Some festivals reward years, not purchases. Electric Forest's 2020 program gave attendees with six previous years the lowest GA and Good Life prices, priority lodging and early entry, with a presale on December 4, 2019, at 10am EST. Four-year attendees got a discount and a later slot, then prior-year Good Life holders, then prior-year GA camping holders, with the general on-sale on December 6.102
Festival apps have also been used to hand out exclusive presale codes and post-purchase VIP upgrades, according to Drew Burchfield of app maker Aloompa (2023).103
What do "early bird" and "Tier 1" mean?
They are the cheapest tickets, sold first and in limited numbers. Once a tier sells out, the price rises to the next one.101
Lollapalooza 2013 is the textbook case: early-bird three-day passes cost $200 and sold out "within minutes" before the lineup was announced, and the next tier was $235.104 That same story is a lesson in reading headlines. "Early bird passes sold out" meant one tier, while regular three-day passes were still on sale.104 When you see "sold out," check what sold out.
Pass types stack on top of tiers. Boston Calling's 2025 starting prices, as reported by SoapCentral (not an official list), for the festival at the Harvard Athletic Complex, May 23-25, 2025:95
| Pass | 1-Day | 2-Day | 3-Day |
|---|---|---|---|
| GA | $169 | $330 | $350 |
| GA+ | $299 | - | $535 |
| VIP | $449 | - | $900 |
| Platinum | $1,299 | - | $2,700 |
How does Glastonbury sell tickets?
Glastonbury does almost everything differently, and its official page for 2027 lays it out.105
- Register first. Everyone aged 13 or over on June 23, 2027, has to register individually before the sale. Each ticket carries the registered holder's photo, and security admits only the person pictured.
- Pay a deposit. A £100 deposit per person at booking, with the £308 balance plus postage due between 9am BST April 1 and 11:59pm BST April 7, 2027 - £408 in all, including a £5 booking fee, plus £11.25 postage per order.
- Buy six at most. The limit is six tickets per transaction.
- No transfers. Tickets are "strictly non-transferable" to prevent touting (the UK word for scalping).
Standard tickets went on sale on October 4, 2026 (RadioX), and when the official page was loaded on November 5, 2026, it carried the headline "Tickets for Glastonbury 2027 have now sold out."106105
How do festival payment plans work?
A payment plan (also sold as layaway) splits the ticket into a deposit and later installments. Glastonbury's deposit-then-balance model is the long-standing UK version.105 In the US, Outside Lands' 2026 three-day payment plans "start at $99 down" (official).101 Riot Fest offered three- or six-month plans in 2019 through Affirm, a third-party lender, chosen at Eventbrite checkout; its page gave no fees or missed-payment terms.107
The terms that matter - fees, and what happens if a payment fails - live in each festival's help center. Read them before you commit, not after.
Resale: face-value exchanges vs. open resale
There are two broad models. Glastonbury ties the ticket to a named, photographed person and allows only official resale: returned and canceled tickets go back on sale in spring 2027.105 That resale runs on two dates in late April 2027 - a Thursday for coach-plus-ticket packages and a Sunday general sale - and See Tickets is the only official seller.106 A ticketing vendor's case study says Michael Eavis introduced photo registration in the mid-2000s "to stop ticket touting altogether," with resold tickets going only to other registered users at the standard price; the exact year is unconfirmed.108
The other model uses a ticketer's waiting list and warns fans off third-party sites, as Newport Folk did through DICE in 2025.99 Where neither is in place, the gap fills fast: those $1,000-plus Newport listings appeared within minutes.98
Face-value resale means official resale at the original price. If a festival runs one, it is the safe way to buy late.
Do festivals use dynamic pricing?
Dynamic pricing means prices that move live with demand during the sale. The festivals cited in this guide publish pre-set rising tiers instead, which is a different thing: the steps are announced, not calculated on the fly.101
The flashpoint was a tour, not a festival. The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) opened an investigation into Ticketmaster over the August 31, 2024, Oasis on-sale, looking at dynamic pricing and consumer law. Informed sources estimated 10-15% of 1.4 million tickets were dynamically priced, with a face value around £150 against an "In Demand" price around £355. Oasis said it was not aware dynamic pricing would be used. The CMA said "it should not be assumed that Ticketmaster has broken consumer protection law."109
In the US, the Federal Trade Commission's rule, in force since May 12, 2025, requires live-event sellers to show the total price, including mandatory fees, up front. Dynamic pricing is still allowed if the total is disclosed at each step. Optional add-ons such as VIP, plus taxes and shipping, can be shown separately but must appear in the final price before checkout, and resale marketplaces are covered too.110 This is all-in pricing.
How do festivals advertise?
Mostly through the audience. In Eventbrite's 2015 Pulse Report (500-plus event professionals, covering 2014), 36% of festival organizers rated free social promotion their most effective tactic, against 20% for other events, and 28% chose word of mouth, against 19%. Under 10% chose email, against 31% for other events, and 6% ranked paid social first, against 3%. 76% expected their social media use to rise.111
Fans report the same thing from the other side. In Eventbrite's 2019 Australian Music Fans Report (1,100-plus respondents), 41% heard about the festival they attended through social media, 22% through word of mouth and 11% through organizers' direct marketing.112
The aftermovie - a polished recap video released after the event - is the festival's year-round ad. Tomorrowland's 2011 aftermovie, about half an hour long, had passed 70 million views by 2015, and the format spread from Gottwood to EDC; Mixmag's writer argued it had become formulaic and leaves out the heat and the mud.113 By the festival's own 2017 figures, Tomorrowland claimed 1.2 billion online touchpoints, 200 million-plus livestream viewers, 184 million unique people reached on Facebook, 355 million YouTube minutes viewed and 77 million Snapchat views.114
Paid Meta (Facebook and Instagram) ads and retargeting are part of most campaigns, but no independent data on festival ad spend turned up for this guide. For free lessons on selling out a room with Meta ads, see Darkroom Ad School.
Early tiers vs. late buyers
Festivals push early buying because the wider market has gone the other way. Eventbrite's 2024 Music Edit found "57% of all tickets are purchased a week or less before the show date," and the average gap between purchase and show fell 26% from 2022 to 2024. That covers all music events, not festivals, and the sample size was not stated.115 Tiers, loyalty codes and payment plans are the festival's answer: reasons to commit months out.
What does the festival app do for sales?
Aloompa built its first festival app for Bonnaroo in 2009 and was paid in 10 festival passes; its clients have included Coachella, Lollapalooza and Rock in Rio. Burchfield said in 2023 that order-ahead users increased their consumption by about 30-40%, and that targeting keeps fans to about 10-20 push notifications per event.103 Boston Calling launched a free iPhone and Android app on September 15, 2015, with a map, a customizable schedule and push notifications including weather alerts.116
Elsewhere in the world
The UK runs the strictest model cited here: named, photo-registered Glastonbury tickets with official-only resale, and a regulator (the CMA) examining dynamic pricing after the 2024 Oasis sale.105109 Belgium's Tomorrowland posted a record 18-minute sellout in its Belgian presale in 2025.97 In Australia, social media led festival discovery in 2019.112 In the US the rules focus on fee disclosure under the FTC's 2025 all-in pricing rule.110
Quick answers
What is an early bird festival ticket?
It is the cheapest tier, sold first in limited numbers, and the price steps up once it sells out. Lollapalooza's 2013 early-bird three-day passes were $200; the next tier was $235.
How do I register for Glastonbury tickets?
Everyone aged 13 or over on June 23, 2027 must register individually before the sale, and each ticket carries the holder's photo. Booking takes a £100 deposit per person, with the balance due April 1-7, 2027.
Why did Newport Folk sell out without a lineup?
Newport Folk 2025 sold out in under a minute on February 5, 2025 without announcing a performer, as reported by Newport Buzz. Later buyers were sent to a DICE waiting list and the festival warned against speculative resale listings.
Do festivals use dynamic pricing?
Most cited festivals sell in pre-set rising tiers rather than live demand pricing. The debate centers on the 2024 Oasis tour sale, which the UK CMA investigated; in the US, the FTC has required all-in prices including mandatory fees since May 12, 2025.
