12The global festival season

The short version: There is no off-season for the planet, only a relay. The Southern Hemisphere and the tropics take January to March, the US opens its desert and city-park season in spring, Europe runs flat out from June to August with July the most crowded month, and Rio and the Gulf pick up September and December. The biggest names on each continent run on very different models - a non-profit in Denmark, a dairy farm in England, a two-weekend electronic city in Belgium, a ski resort in Japan - and 2024 to 2026 showed how easily the relay drops a baton: a stage fire, a planned year off, a festival leaving its country, and a flagship canceled twice.

When is festival season, really?

It depends which half of the globe you stand on, and how much rain you can tolerate. Southern Hemisphere summer is December to February, so Australia's touring festivals and South America's Lollapalooza editions run while Europe is in coats. In March 2025, Lollapalooza Argentina ran March 21-23 at the Hipódromo de San Isidro with more than 100 artists.239 Laneway's 2026 run covered six cities in eleven days, Auckland to Perth, February 5-15.240

The US desert and city-park season opens in spring - Coachella in April, which has its own guide, Polo - and EDC Las Vegas in mid-May.241 Europe takes over in June. Then the calendar thins out but never stops: Rock in Rio's 2024 edition ran across two weekends in September,242 and Saudi Arabia's MDLBEAST Soundstorm sits in December, when the desert outside Riyadh is cool enough to dance in.243

Dates in the table below are from recent editions, so treat them as a guide to the month, not a booking.

Europe: why is July so crowded?

Europe has the densest festival calendar in the world, and the biggest names barely resemble each other. Roskilde in Denmark began on August 28-29, 1971 as the "Sound Festival," for 10,000 to 13,000 people at 30 Danish kroner a ticket.18 It is run by a non-profit foundation and, per Festival Insights in 2025, "powered by 30,000 volunteers";263 the festival's own 2026 figure is about 27,000.234 Wikipedia lists 130,000-plus attending in 2024 and a 2,600-krone ticket for 2026.18

Primavera Sound opened on April 28, 2001 at Barcelona's Poble Espanyol for 7,700 people,23 and by 2025 it drew about 293,000 to Parc del Fòrum, a record, with 65% of attendees traveling from outside Spain, from 136 countries (organizer figures).264 The 2026 edition, its 24th, reported 287,000.245

Sziget, on Óbuda Island in Budapest, drew 416,000 visitors over six days in 2025 and still told reporters it was not yet profitable, "coming out of a negative period that lasted until approximately the end of 2022."254 A big crowd and a healthy balance sheet are different things.

Belgium alone fills a summer. Rock Werchter marked its 50th year in 2025 with daily attendance that "neared 90,000," up from about 650 people in 1975; Pukkelpop in Hasselt ran four days with "at least 66,000 each day."255

Festival Where First held Recent size (year, type)
Glastonbury England 197013 license for up to 210,000 on site incl. staff and performers (2025, reported)2
Tomorrowland Boom, Belgium 200526 400,000 ticket holders over two weekends (2025, reported)97
Sziget Budapest, Hungary - 416,000 over six days (2025, reported)254
Primavera Sound Barcelona, Spain 200123 about 293,000 (2025, organizer)264
FIB Benicàssim, Spain - more than 135,000 (2024, reported)251
Roskilde Roskilde, Denmark 197118 130,000+ (2024, Wikipedia)18
Awakenings Hilvarenbeek, Netherlands - over 119,000, sold out (2026, organizer)250
Rock am Ring Nürburgring, Germany - 90,000 tickets, sold out (2025, reported)246
Rock Werchter Werchter, Belgium 1975255 nearly 90,000 a day (2025, reported)255

Rock am Ring's 2025 edition was its 40th anniversary, with 100 acts; its sister festival Rock im Park held its 30th.246 Awakenings, a techno festival with a forest stage, a hidden rave area and an industrial warehouse among its areas, sold out its July 2026 edition at its biggest size ever.250

Why is there no Glastonbury in 2026?

Because the farm needs a rest. Glastonbury takes a fallow year - a planned year off - "roughly every five years," according to AP's 2025 count, and 2026 is one of them.2 The fan-run Glastopedia archive dates the first fallow year to 1988, to "give the land, locals, and organisers a break," with more in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2012 and 2018; 2020 and 2021 were pandemic cancellations it calls an "enforced fallow year."15 The next festival is set for June 23-27, 2027.17 What the year off does for the farm itself is in Waste, carbon and the town next door.

The scale it rests from is considerable. In 2025 the license allowed up to 210,000 people on site, "including fans, staff and performers," and the festival sold "a few thousand" fewer tickets than that. General admission sold out in 35 minutes. There were 120 stages, 3,972 performers and more than 4,000 toilets, and single-use plastic bottles have been banned since 2019.2 Sources disagree on the size of the land: AP says 1,000 acres (about 405 hectares),2 Radio X says a 900-acre dairy farm (about 364 hectares).17

It started small. The first event, in September 1970, the day after Jimi Hendrix died, cost £1 with free milk from the farm and drew 1,500 people (official).13 Reading, the UK's other institution, traces back further, to the National Jazz Festival at Richmond in August 1961; it settled in Reading in 1971 and added a Leeds site in 1999.16

What happened to the Tomorrowland main stage in 2025?

It burned down two days before the gates opened, and the festival went ahead anyway. Around 2 PM on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, a fire destroyed the main stage at the De Schorre site in Boom, about 16 km (10 miles) south of Antwerp. No one was hurt. Antwerp prosecutors opened an investigation and said the fire "appeared accidental."265 About 1,000 festival workers were on site; Tomorrowland said damage was "limited to only the main stage," and the DreamVille campsite opened at 10 AM on July 17 as planned.266 A smaller replacement stage was built by July 18, according to Wikipedia's account.26

The edition was a big one to protect. Belgian presale buyers took 200,000 tickets in 18 minutes, beating the previous year's 27, across two weekends with 400,000 ticket holders in total.97 The two-weekend model is how Tomorrowland has doubled its crowd without doubling its site since 2017 (it was first tried in 2014, for the tenth anniversary); it began in August 2005 with about 10,000 people.26 Belga reported 481 offences and 67 arrests across the two 2025 weekends, and the death of a 35-year-old Canadian woman during the first weekend, with drug use the suspected cause.255

Why did Exit leave Serbia?

Exit was founded in 2000 by student activists in Novi Sad, and its 25th edition, July 10-13, 2025 at Petrovaradin Fortress, was announced as its last in Serbia. Organizers cited "financial and political pressure" after the festival backed student-led protests, and said they had been cut off from public funding at all levels. Founder Dušan Kovačević called it "the hardest decision in our 25-year history but we believe that freedom has no price."248 That is the organizers' account; the Serbian government's response was not part of the reporting we used.

Exit took its brand on a 2026 "world tour"; Mixmag reported in May 2026 that its new summer home would be Long Beach in Ulcinj, Montenegro, with the backing of Montenegro's Prime Minister Milojko Spajić.267 On October 29, 2026, N1 reported that Exit plans to return to Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad in July 2027, a year earlier than organizers had planned, which they credited to "thousands of messages from fans."268

Japan and Asia: how big is Fuji Rock?

Fuji Rock is older and more domestic than its European peers, and it has the weather story to prove it. The first edition in 1997 was hit by a typhoon on day one; day two was canceled and there were hypothermia cases. After a year in Tokyo it settled at the Naeba ski resort in Niigata in 1999, with the stated aim of being "the cleanest festival in the world."22

The 2025 edition, its 28th, drew 122,000 over four days, July 24-27: 16,000 on the pre-festival night, then 33,000, 39,000 and 34,000 (organizer Smash).252 Only about 10% of sales went abroad, to buyers in 60 countries led by Taiwan, South Korea and China, and according to Smash, sales were "the strongest they have been since the COVID-19 pandemic."269 The record stands at 140,000 over three days in 2012.22

Elsewhere in Asia, US electronic brands are moving in. Wikipedia lists EDC editions in Shanghai (2018), the Seoul area (2019) and Phuket, Thailand (January 2025), where two tourist deaths were reported.244

Summer Sonic, from the promoter Creativeman, launched in 2000 and runs in Tokyo (ZOZO Marine Stadium and Makuhari Messe) and Osaka (Expo '70 Commemorative Park). For its 25th anniversary in 2026 it planned its largest edition yet, over three days, with a target of a record 330,000 attendees (organizer target, announced December 2025).260 December has two other regional fixtures: Wonderfruit at Siam Country Club near Pattaya, Thailand, which held its tenth edition on December 11-15, 2025,270 and Djakarta Warehouse Project, which ran December 12-14, 2025 at GWK Cultural Park in Bali, Indonesia.271

Oceania: why was Splendour in the Grass canceled?

Australia's flagship festival skipped 2024 and then 2025. Splendour in the Grass, running since 2001 and operated by the Live Nation-backed Secret Sounds, said it needed "a little more time to recharge"; sources told Guardian Australia it could not secure overseas headliners of sufficient caliber. The 2024 cancellation came after a lineup with Kylie Minogue, Future and Arcade Fire had been announced.272 In 2025 its North Byron Parklands site, 229 hectares (about 566 acres), was reported for sale at about A$35 million; Live Nation co-owns the festival but not the land.273 Sources disagree on how long it has been there: one says since 2013,272 another "for over twenty years."273

The wider sector called it a crisis. Australian Festival Association managing director Olly Arkins said "everything that goes into a festival saw significant increases" while ticket prices could not keep pace, and the AFA said artists increasingly prefer arena and stadium tours. Groovin the Moo, Harvest Rock and Spilt Milk were among the festivals axed in 2024, and Pitch Music and Arts was canceled for extreme fire danger.274

Laneway shows the other Australian model, the touring circuit: one lineup moving city to city. It "began as a little street party in a Melbourne laneway," and its 2026 run marked 21 years; the Queensland leg left its Brisbane site because that site is being prepared for the 2032 Olympics.240

Latin America: Rock in Rio and the Lollapalooza circuit

Rock in Rio is the region's legacy giant. Its 2024 edition was billed as the festival's 40th anniversary275 and ran seven days, September 13-15 and 19-22. A finance outlet summarizing organizer figures puts the cumulative audience at "over 11.2 million" across 130 days since 1985.242

Lollapalooza, which began as a US touring package on July 18, 1991 in Arizona,19 now has a March circuit in Chile, Argentina and Brazil. Argentina's 10th edition in 2025 let children under 10 in free with an adult.239

The Rio Times reported that the 2024 edition drew 730,000 people across its seven days (reported, March 2025; the article does not name the source of the figure).276 Lollapalooza Chile was first held on April 2-3, 2011 at Parque O'Higgins in Santiago, and Wikipedia gives its attendance record as 225,000 in 2022, at Parque Bicentenario in Cerrillos. Lollapalooza Brasil followed in São Paulo in 2012.277

Africa: Afro Nation and Nyege Nyege

The continent's two best-known festival names came from opposite directions. Afro Nation is a diaspora-facing beach festival that started on August 1, 2019 at Praia da Rocha in Portimão, Portugal; Wikipedia gives its 2023 Portugal crowd as about 40,000 from 140 countries and says 90% of festival-goers travel from abroad (without dating that share), with editions also in Ghana (2022), Puerto Rico, Miami and Detroit, and Live Nation among its organizers.278 Nyege Nyege is an underground electronic festival founded in 2015 in Jinja, Uganda, "the city at the source of the Nile." It drew about 20,000 people in 2023, and its ninth edition in 2024 moved to a 12-acre (about 5-hectare) site across from the old one.279

Middle East: how big is MDLBEAST Soundstorm?

Saudi Arabia's Soundstorm, at Banban outside Riyadh, reported "over 180,000 people" on the first day of its 2021 edition, with more than 500,000 expected over four days.243 Those are reported first-day and expected figures, not an audited total. Coverage of the Saudi state's role in entertainment is contested; this guide reports the attendance and leaves the argument to the sources.

The US: EDC, Lollapalooza and the weather

US megafestivals cluster from spring to late summer. EDC Las Vegas at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is the attendance giant: "over 525,000 festival-goers" across three nights in 2024, with next-year "Owl Passes" going on sale for $5 deposits.241 Its founding date depends on whom you ask: Wikipedia traces an Electric Daisy Carnival to Chino, California in 1991,244 while Insomniac's own history dates the first EDC to 1997 at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles, with the move to Las Vegas in 2011.27

Lollapalooza Chicago is the city-park model at scale: "roughly 115,000 attendees each day" in Grant Park in 2025, with 12 arrests and 42 hospitalizations, the lowest in at least six years, per city figures.253 It had more than 170 artists, with Sabrina Carpenter closing Sunday.280 The festival stopped touring in 1997 and became a yearly Chicago event in 2005.20

Why was Bonnaroo 2025 canceled?

Rain. On Friday, June 13, 2025, organizers evacuated the fields at The Farm in Manchester, Tennessee, and canceled the rest of the four-day festival after storms, flooding and a National Weather Service forecast of more heavy rain: "We are beyond gutted, but we must make the safest decision and cancel the remainder of Bonnaroo." Four-day pass holders were initially offered 75% back; one-day passes were fully refunded.247 Bonnaroo began on June 21-23, 2002, when more than 70,000 tickets sold out in advance,24 and it runs on a 700-acre (about 283-hectare) farm; Wikipedia notes a 2021 cancellation for Hurricane Ida rain as well.25

On June 20, 2025, organizers raised that to a full refund - "we are updating the refund to 100% rather than the 75% originally offered" - covering four-day admission and four-day camping bought through Front Gate Tickets, paid to the original payment method "in as little as 30 days."281

Is Burning Man a festival?

Not by its own account. In the official Burning Man Journal in 2012, Caveat Magister wrote that "Burning Man refuses to acknowledge the category," calling it "an engine of possibility" and citing a Yahoo piece that conceded it is "more like a makeshift city than a festival."282 A 2017 Journal piece called it "a social experiment for the ages" and Black Rock City a place "born each August out of a shared intention to create," and argued that the media's use of "festival" misleads newcomers.256 It often appears on festival lists anyway, which is why it is here: it inverts the model, with no headliners and no spectators by design.

Elsewhere in the world: the 2024-2026 squeeze

The season's gaps are not only weather and fire. In the UK, the Association of Independent Festivals, a trade body for independents, counted a record 78 festivals canceled, postponed or closed in 2024 and 249 lost since 2019 as of June 2025, and proposed a tax relief for events under 30,000 capacity.3 It had earlier asked for VAT on tickets to drop from 20% to 5%.38 Those are a trade body's figures; the UK government's response was not in our sources. In the US, Pitchfork said in November 2024 that it would not hold its Chicago festival in 2025, after 19 years, and gave no reason; fans blamed Condé Nast cost-cutting, others "a struggling market for music festivals in general."44

In New England

New England is where the multi-day outdoor festival template is usually said to start, though the claim has a rival: Los Angeles ran the annual Cavalcade of Jazz at Wrigley Field from 1945.4 The Newport Jazz Festival opened on July 17, 1954 with tickets at "$3 to $5" and Billie Holiday and Dizzy Gillespie on the bill.6 The Newport Folk Festival followed in 1959.7 Both now run at Fort Adams State Park under the non-profit Newport Festivals Foundation, in place since 2011.4

Boston Calling debuted on Memorial Day weekend in 2013 and has been a late-May festival since 2016;9 since 2017 it has used Harvard's athletic complex in Allston.283 There is no 2026 edition; organizers announced a return for June 4-6, 2027,57 but in October 2026 Axios Boston reported the festival's future "in doubt" with organizers silent.138 The rest of the regional calendar, from Green River to the July 4 Pops concert, is in New England: from Newport to Boston Calling.
